PURCHASING THE RIGHT PUPPY
Over the years we have learned that giving some consideration into the family's dynamics helps us make a good fit i.e. lively active people gravitate towards an active dog vs quieter dogs do better in a calmer environment.Picking the perfect puppy is an inexact science but with monitoring and testing we are more likely to achieve better results.
All puppies receive 2 visits with our Veterinarian and their first set of shots, along with their health record re worming, etc. A diet sheet is provided with a supply of their chow. A toy and blanket is given to assist the puppy settling into his new home. Puppies are crate trained to assist them in house training and sleeping overnight, this starts at 7 weeks.
Once in awhile we will have available young adults, most of the time they are finished champions, that we feel would be happier in an individual home rather than share our home with 5 other sammies. Should this be of interest to you please indicate and we will follow up with pictures and details.

AN INTRODUCTION TO:
GROOMING TIPS: - A mixture of corn starch (can be bought in Bulk Store) with 10% baking soda put in a shaker (with a few kidney beans to keep it flowing) is an inexpensive dry shampoo, used on any soiled area of the coat or to freshen up the coat. As a sammy doesn't have a doggy smell he doesn't require frequent baths.
Weekly combing or brushing will keep a sammy looking good. Line combing or brushing is the easiest method. Separating the coat in one area at a time and combing until you can see the skin, holding the skin and coat with the left hand and slowly comb towards your left hand in a line, don't try to cover too large an area at one time. This takes time and is best done after a puppy has learned to stay on a secure table. Once trained a dog will enjoy his weekly beauty sessions. At this time nails should be checked and cut if necessary.
TRAINING: A sammy puppy, although somewhat independent, can best be summed up in a few words. - enthusiasm on the trainers part! This will give the puppy the feeling its just another game. Not "do it" but "lets do it" its all in the approach. The earlier we begin with a positive approach the easier it is, puppies must learn "How to learn". Gently holding the pups muzzle and looking into his eyes with a warm smile is a good start with "watch me".
A firm word with gentle touch goes a long way to ensure an adult dog who listens and responds to your wishes.
We introduce our puppies to the come, sit, stand and down at 6 weeks - and go from there.
